Volunteers Learn about the Key Meanings of the Great Miracle of the Appearance of Christ

The volunteers will not only help organize celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Appearance of Christ the Savior in Elista, but will also share their knowledge with participants and guests. The lecture was organized to help volunteers better understand the importance of their role in creating the atmosphere of the events. More than 50 people attended, including Movement of the First activists and silver-age volunteers.

The candidate of historical sciences noted that the miracle became a symbol of the people’s faith during the years of state atheism and a spiritual response during the difficult postwar period.

“At that time, the country was only beginning to recover from the Great Patriotic War and was living in extreme need, yet the faithful of Elista began raising funds to create the icon. Despite hunger and devastation, people immediately responded to the appeal. One witness to the miracle was Semyon Bondarenko, a resident of the village of Troitskoye. He volunteered to walk to Stavropol to find an icon painter, who, following his account, painted The Appearance of the Lord Jesus Christ to Those Praying in the City of Elista. The shrine is still carefully preserved at the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and has become documentary evidence of the miracle,” the Knowledge Society lecturer said.

According to the lecturer, believers saw the Appearance of Christ the Savior as a symbol of the region’s revival and a sign of support and blessing. It strengthened their belief that the people would overcome their hardships. Soon after a prolonged famine, bread became available even to Elista’s poorest residents. Years later, the Kalmyk people were able to return from exile to their homeland. The fate of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is also remarkable: while churches across Kalmykia were being closed one after another, it always remained open to parishioners.

“In Russia’s Year of the Unity of Peoples, the 80th anniversary of the Appearance of Christ the Savior in Elista takes on special significance. The event unites faith, historical memory and continuity between generations. Kalmykia, where most residents practice Buddhism, carefully and deeply reveres this Orthodox shrine. It is vivid proof that different religions and peoples in our country have coexisted in peace and harmony for centuries, and that shared spiritual values form a reliable foundation for interethnic and interfaith unity,” Knowledge Society lecturer Dmitry Dovgopolov said.
