Twenty Years Ago, Elista Marked the 60th Anniversary of the Appearance of the Savior
In 2006, the Divine Liturgy and a procession with the revered icon marked the 60th anniversary of the Appearance of Christ the Savior in Elista.
In September 2006, Orthodox residents of Elista celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Appearance of Christ the Savior. After the Divine Liturgy, the faithful, led by the archpastor, went through a procession with a revered icon around Kazan Cathedral and the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
The celebrations showed that the memory of the event of 1946 was preserved not only in the stories of the families of eyewitnesses, but also in the liturgical life of the city. The anniversary united parishioners around a common history and local church tradition.
Twenty years later, Elista is preparing for its 80th anniversary. Referring to the previous anniversary celebrations helps to see the continuity and understand how the modern program of commemorative events was formed.
